1 What you may not do

#

This Acceptable Use Policy is part of our Terms of Service, and the words it capitalises mean what they mean there. It applies to everyone who uses the Service, and to every link, slug, label, destination, team name and logo you create in it. You may not use the Service, or let anyone use it, to create, host, send people to, or promote:

  • phishing — pages that imitate a sign-in, payment or verification form, or otherwise try to obtain passwords, card details or other personal data by deception;
  • malware — viruses, spyware, ransomware, unwanted or deceptive software, or any download or page that attacks or takes control of a visitor's device;
  • fraud and deception — scams, fake giveaways, investment or payment fraud, counterfeit goods, fake app listings, or a destination that misleads visitors about who is behind it or what it is;
  • impersonation — posing as another person, company, brand, public body or as SetLinks, including through a slug, label or team name chosen to suggest a connection that does not exist;
  • spam — unsolicited bulk messages of any kind (email, SMS, messaging apps, comments, forums or social networks) that contain or promote SetLinks links;
  • infringement — material that infringes anyone's copyright, trademark or other intellectual-property right, or their privacy or publicity rights;
  • abuse of people — harassment, threats, incitement to violence, terrorist content, publishing someone's private information without their consent, or sexual images of a person shared without their consent;
  • child sexual abuse material, or anything that sexualises or endangers minors; or
  • anything illegal — content, goods or services that are unlawful where they are offered or where the visitor is, or activity that breaks the law.
In plain words

No phishing, malware, scams, impersonation, spam, stolen content, harassment or anything illegal — whether in the link itself or where it leads.

2 Your links and destinations

#

You are responsible for every link your team creates and for everything its destinations contain, including pages you do not control. We do not review links before they go live, and we do not scan destinations; that is part of why this policy exists. In particular:

  • A link must send visitors where they would reasonably expect to go. An app-store destination must be the listing of the app the link is shared for.
  • Do not change a link's destination, after it has been shared, to something this policy prohibits, and do not use device routing to show harmful content only to some devices while showing a harmless page to others.
  • Do not chain SetLinks links, or combine them with other redirect services, to hide a destination from visitors or from us, or to get a destination past another service's safety or spam filters.
  • Store attribution and click analytics are for measuring your own links. If you use them, you are responsible for having a lawful basis for that measurement, as § 6 of the Terms says.

A team owner is responsible for the links that the team's admins and members create, as for everything else they do in the Service (§ 3 of the Terms).

In plain words

Where your link goes is your responsibility. No bait-and-switch, and no hiding the real destination.

3 Limits and the integrity of the Service

#

You may not:

  • get around your plan's limits on links, members or teams, for example by opening extra accounts or teams beyond what your plan allows, or by sharing one login between several people;
  • get around a rate limit, including by spreading requests across several API keys, accounts or teams, or get around any restriction on access by location that we apply, including by using a VPN or proxy;
  • probe, scan or test the vulnerability of the Service, or put it under load, without our written permission; break or bypass its authentication or security; or interfere with its operation for other customers;
  • access, or try to access, another customer's account, team or data, or collect other customers' links by automated means, such as by trying slugs in bulk; or
  • generate artificial traffic to links in a volume that burdens the Service.

No plan limits how many times your links are clicked or scanned, so real traffic, however large, does not breach this policy. As § 4 of the Terms says, traffic is subject to fair use: if a team's traffic is far beyond what is usual for its plan, we may contact the owner and ask the team to move to a plan that fits it.

If you find a security vulnerability, please report it to support@setlinks.io and give us a reasonable time to fix it before you disclose it. Doing so in good faith, without accessing more data than needed to show the problem, is not a breach of this section.

In plain words

Don't dodge limits, attack the Service, or poke at other people's data. Real traffic is never a breach, within fair use.

4 Sanctions

#

You may not use the Service if you, or anyone you act for, are named on, or owned or controlled by anyone named on, a sanctions list maintained by the United States, the European Union or the United Kingdom; or if you are located, organised or ordinarily resident in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, the Crimea region, or the so-called Donetsk or Luhansk People's Republics, or in any other country or region that becomes subject to comprehensive sanctions under those laws. You may not use the Service for or on behalf of such a person or place.

We may block access by location. Using a VPN, proxy or any other means to get around such a block breaches this policy. § 8 of the Terms sets out these rules in full, and it governs if the two differ.

In plain words

We cannot serve sanctioned people or embargoed regions, and getting around a location block is not allowed.

5 Reporting abuse

#

If a SetLinks link leads somewhere this policy prohibits, report it to support@setlinks.io. Please include:

  • the full short link or links (for example setlinks.io/example);
  • what is wrong, and where the link leads, with screenshots if you have them; and
  • how we can contact you if we need more information.

If a link leads to child sexual abuse material, send us only the link — never screenshots, copies or downloads — and report it also to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at report.cybertip.org, or to your national hotline (inhope.org).

Put "Abuse" in the subject line of a report of phishing, malware or another risk to the people following the link; it helps us deal with it first. We review reports and act on those that show a breach; we may not be able to tell you the outcome of every report.

Copyright complaints

If you believe a SetLinks link leads to material that infringes your copyright, send a notice to support@setlinks.io with the subject line "Copyright notice". To be effective under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3), and § 512(d)(3) for links), it must include:

  1. the physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or of a person authorised to act for them;
  2. identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed, or a representative list if there are several;
  3. identification of the infringing material or activity, and of the SetLinks link (reference) concerned and the destination it leads to, with enough detail for us to find it;
  4. your name, postal address, telephone number and email address;
  5. a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use complained of is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent or the law; and
  6. a statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or authorised to act for them.

We may send a copy of the notice, including your name and contact details, to the customer responsible for the link. If we disable a link because of a notice and that customer believes it was disabled by mistake or misidentification, they may send us a counter-notice containing the elements of 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3): their signature; identification of the link and where it led before it was disabled; a statement under penalty of perjury that they have a good-faith belief the material was disabled by mistake or misidentification; and their name, address, telephone number and consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for their district (or, outside the United States, any district in which we may be found), and to accept service from the person who sent the notice or an agent of that person. We will forward it to that person and will restore the link not less than 10 nor more than 14 business days after we receive it, unless they first tell us that they have filed a court action to restrain the infringement. Anyone who knowingly makes a material misrepresentation in a notice or counter-notice may be liable for damages (17 U.S.C. § 512(f)).

Illegal content under EU law

You can also notify us of a link you consider illegal under the law of an EU member state, including under the EU Digital Services Act. Send it to support@setlinks.io with an explanation of why you consider it illegal, the exact short link, your name and email address (not required if the notice concerns child sexual abuse material), and a statement that you believe in good faith that the notice is accurate and complete. We will confirm that we have received it and tell you what we decided.

Our single point of contact under Articles 11 and 12 of the Digital Services Act, for authorities of EU member states, the European Commission, the European Board for Digital Services and users of the Service, is support@setlinks.io; we accept messages in English. If you disagree with our decision, you can ask us to reconsider it (§ 6) or seek redress before the courts.

Authorities

Law-enforcement and other authorities can send requests and orders to support@setlinks.io. We disclose personal data to authorities where the law requires it, and otherwise only where we believe in good faith that it is necessary to protect someone from serious harm, as our Privacy Policy explains. The click data we process on a Customer's behalf is disclosed only on that Customer's instructions or where the law requires it, and requests for it are handled as § 11 of our Data Processing Addendum describes.

In plain words

Found a bad link? Email us the link and what's wrong with it. Copyright owners and people in the EU have a formal notice process too.

6 What we do about it

#

If we reasonably believe that a link, a team or an account breaks this policy, or that it puts visitors, other customers, the Service or us at risk, we may do one or more of the following:

  • stop the link from resolving, by pausing it or by removing it from the Service;
  • stop all of a team's links from resolving;
  • revoke the team's API keys;
  • suspend the account, or the accounts of the people responsible;
  • close the team or the account, and delete its data as our Privacy Policy describes;
  • refuse a new account or team to the same person or organisation; and
  • report child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, as US law requires, and report other matters to the authorities where the law requires it or where we believe in good faith that it is necessary to protect someone from serious harm; the click data we process for a Customer is reported only where the law requires it.

We may act without notice where a link poses a risk to the people who follow it, or where the law requires it. Otherwise, where it is reasonable and lawful, we will tell you first and give you a chance to put things right, as § 11 of the Terms says. When we act, we will tell the customer affected what we did and why, unless the law or an authority forbids it.

Decisions to stop a link, or to suspend, close or refuse a team or an account, under this policy are made by a person on our team; we do not currently use automated systems to detect abusive links. Plan limits and rate limits (§ 3) are applied automatically. You can ask us to reconsider a decision by writing to support@setlinks.io, and someone who can reverse it will look at it again.

Once we have told you that we stopped a link, resuming it, re-creating it, or creating another link to the same destination, without our agreement, is itself a breach of this policy.

We will, in appropriate circumstances, close the accounts of customers who repeatedly infringe others' copyright or other intellectual-property rights.

We are not obliged to monitor the Service or the links in it, and our not acting on a breach does not mean we accept it. If we end the Service for your breach of this policy, § 11 of the Terms applies, including to fees paid in advance.

In plain words

We can switch off a harmful link, suspend or close an account. A person decides, you'll be told why unless the law or an authority forbids it, and you can ask us to look again.

7 Changes

#

This is version 1.1 of this policy. Because it is part of the Terms, it changes the way § 17 of the Terms describes: material changes are announced by email and on our legal page at least 30 days before they take effect, except where the law, or an urgent security or abuse problem, requires a change sooner. Every version is recorded in the change log.

In plain words

Material changes come with a month's warning, unless abuse or the law can't wait.
