How it works

What you need from Apple

Your Team ID: ten letters and digits, shown under Membership details in your Apple Developer account. Your bundle ID, such as com.example.app, from Xcode or App Store Connect. The app ID in the file is the two joined with a dot.

Paths decide which links open the app. “/*” takes every link on the domain; “/promo/*” only those under /promo. Start a line with NOT to exclude it — exclusions must come before the rule they carve out of, because iOS uses the first match.

What you need from Google

Your package name (the applicationId) and the SHA-256 fingerprint of every certificate that signs a build people install. With Google Play App Signing, copy it from Play Console under App integrity; for your own keystore, keytool -list -v prints it.

Fingerprints are 32 pairs of hex digits separated by colons. The generator accepts them with or without colons, in any case, and writes them the way Android expects.

Publishing the files

Put apple-app-site-association (no extension) and assetlinks.json in the /.well-known/ folder of the exact host your links use, served over HTTPS with no redirect and as application/json.

Then declare the domain in the app: “applinks:” plus the host in Associated Domains for iOS, and an intent filter with android:autoVerify="true" for that host on Android. Links work after users install the build that contains it.

With a SetLinks link you can skip the hosting: enter the same identifiers on the link and SetLinks publishes the files — for iPhone on setlinks.io or your own domain, for Android on your own domain.

Questions people ask

What is the apple-app-site-association file?

A JSON file that tells iOS which apps may open which links on your domain. Without it, Universal Links open in Safari.

What is assetlinks.json?

Google’s Digital Asset Links file: it states which Android apps, identified by package name and signing certificate, may open links on your domain as verified App Links.

Does the AASA file need a .json extension?

No. It must be named apple-app-site-association with no extension, and still be served with the application/json content type.

Can one file list several apps?

Yes. Generate one entry per app and merge the details arrays (iOS) or the statement arrays (Android) into one file.

Are my identifiers sent anywhere?

No. The files are generated in your browser.
