How it works

How a smart link decides where to go

Every browser sends a user agent: a line of text naming the system and the browser. iPhone, iPad and iPod say so in it, Android phones say “Android”, and Huawei phones without Google services carry markers such as HuaweiBrowser or HMSCore. Anything else is treated as a computer.

SetLinks then picks the first store you filled in for that device: the App Store for iPhone and iPad; Google Play, then RuStore for Android; AppGallery, then RuStore for Huawei — never Google Play, which those phones do not have. Computers go to your desktop page, and anything left over to your fallback address.

One known limit: an iPad in desktop-mode Safari reports itself as a Mac, so it is treated as a computer. Sending a real Mac to the App Store’s mobile page would be the worse mistake.

Why in-app browsers need a button

Links opened inside Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Telegram or VK load in the app’s own browser, which often refuses to hand over to a store. People see a blank page and leave. SetLinks recognises these browsers and shows a short page with an “Open in store” button, which works because it is a tap rather than an automatic redirect.

Testing a link before a campaign

Open the link on a real iPhone and a real Android phone, both from the camera (for QR codes) and from a chat. Send it to yourself in an Instagram direct message and tap it there. Then open it on a computer.

When you do not have a device to hand, paste its user agent above: from a support ticket, from your server logs or from an analytics tool.

Questions people ask

What is a user agent?

A line of text every browser sends with each request, naming the operating system, the device and the browser. Smart links read it to choose a store.

Can I test without a phone?

Yes. Paste any user agent into the field above and the tester shows how a SetLinks link would treat it.

Where does a Huawei phone go?

Huawei phones without Google services go to AppGallery if the link has one, then RuStore, and otherwise to the fallback page — never to Google Play.

Why did my iPad show up as a computer?

Safari on iPad asks for desktop websites by default and then reports itself as a Mac. Nothing in the user agent tells the two apart.

Is my user agent sent anywhere?

No. Detection runs in your browser with the same rules as the redirect, and nothing is sent to us.
